This is the image for the news article titled Elementary Schools Recognized as Project Lead the Way Distinguished Schools Derby Public Schools is pleased to share that all nine elementary schools have been recognized as a 2018-2019 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for providing broad access to transformative learning opportunities for students through PLTW Launch. Only 426 schools across the United States received this honor!

The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, schools had to offer at least two PLTW Launch modules at each grade level and have more than 75 percent of the student body participating during the 2017-18 school year.

These modules are great at meeting the Kansas Science Standards for Engineering, Technology and the Application of Science. The Launch curriculum at the elementary level helps prepare students for PLTW Gateway electives available at the middle school level. The pathway for these courses is continued at Derby High School as PLTW Computer Science, PLTW Engineering and PLTW Biomedical Science pathways.

Whether designing a car safety belt or building digital animations based on their own short stories, PLTW Launch students engage in critical and creative thinking, build teamwork skills, and develop a passion for and confidence in STEM subjects. Congratulations to Cooper, Derby Hills, El Paso, Oaklawn, Park Hill, Pleasantview, Swaney, Tanglewood and Wineteer Elementary schools!
